When September comes to the Homestead

There are certain recipes I find myself making again and again as the seasons change, and these apple crumb muffins are one of them. Once apples start showing up in the kitchen, I always like having a simple recipe on hand that can turn a few of them into something everyone will enjoy.

These muffins are soft and tender with plenty of finely chopped apples throughout, a little cinnamon in the batter, and a buttery crumb topping that gets golden and crisp in the oven. They’re easy enough for a weekday breakfast but feel special enough to serve when family comes over.

I love recipes like this because they don’t require much fuss. You can mix up a batch in the morning, have something homemade ready for breakfast, and use a few of those apples that might otherwise sit in the fruit bowl waiting to be eaten.

Why You’ll Love These Apple Crumb Muffins

I come back to this recipe because it strikes a nice balance between a simple everyday muffin and something that feels a little more indulgent. The chopped apples make them moist and flavorful without needing a lot of extra ingredients, and the crumb topping gives them that bakery-style finish.

They’re also a good way to use up a few apples when you have more on hand than you know what to do with. Make them ahead for breakfast, keep a few in the freezer, or serve them warm for an afternoon snack. It’s an easy recipe to work into the week, especially when you want something homemade without turning baking into an all-day project.really special.

Ingredients Needed

Muffins

All-purpose flour
Baking powder
Baking soda
Ground cinnamon
Salt
Unsalted butter
Brown sugar
Granulated sugar
Eggs
Plain Greek yogurt or sour cream
Buttermilk
Vanilla extract
Apples

Crumb Topping

Unsalted butter
All-purpose flour
Brown sugar
Granulated sugar
Cinnamon
Salt

Equipment Needed

Large mixing bowl
Medium mixing bowl
Electric mixer
12-cup muffin pan
Muffin liners
Whisk
Rubber spatula
Cooling rack

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Muffin Pan
Preheat your oven to 375°F. Line a 12-cup muffin pan with paper liners or lightly grease each cup.

Step 2: Combine the Dry Ingredients
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.

Step 3: Add the Apples to the Dry Ingredients
Add the finely chopped apples to the dry ingredients and gently toss until the apples are evenly coated. Set aside.

Step 4: Cream the Butter and Sugars
In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar together until light and creamy.

Step 5: Add the Wet Ingredients
Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add the Greek yogurt or sour cream, buttermilk, and vanilla, then mix until combined.

Step 6: Combine the Batter
Add the dry ingredients and apples to the wet ingredients. Gently mix just until everything is combined. Be careful not to overmix the batter.

Step 7: Make the Crumb Topping
In a small bowl, combine the butter, flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Stir with a fork until coarse crumbs form.

Step 8: Fill the Muffin Cups
Divide the batter evenly among the 12 muffin cups, filling each one generously. Sprinkle the crumb topping over each muffin, gently pressing it into the batter if needed.

Step 9: Bake the Muffins
Place the muffins in the oven and bake at 450°F for 5 minutes. Without opening the oven, reduce the temperature to 350°F and continue baking for about 20 minutes, or until the tops are golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

That gives you about 25 minutes total baking time, but the toothpick test is the final word since the exact time can vary depending on the size of the muffins and how juicy the apples are.

Step 10: Cool and Serve
Let the muffins cool in the pan for about 5 minutes, then transfer them to a cooling rack. Serve warm or allow them to cool completely before storing.

Tips & Tricks

Finely chop the apples so they distribute evenly throughout the muffins and you get apple in nearly every bite.

Tossing the apples with the dry ingredients before combining everything helps keep the apple pieces from settling together in the batter.

Don’t overmix the batter once the flour is added. Mix just until the ingredients come together for tender muffins.

For generous muffin tops, divide the batter evenly between the cups rather than filling them too sparingly.

Variations

Add chopped pecans or walnuts to the crumb topping for extra crunch.

Stir a little extra cinnamon or apple pie spice into the batter for a warmer flavor.

Add a small handful of raisins to the muffin batter for an apple-and-raisin variation.

Drizzle the cooled muffins with a simple powdered sugar glaze for a sweeter finish.

Storage & Leftovers

Store completely cooled muffins in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Freeze the muffins in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to 3 months.

Thaw frozen muffins at room temperature or warm them gently in the microwave before serving.

There’s something satisfying about taking a few simple ingredients and turning them into something that carries you through the week. These apple crumb muffins are just the sort of baking I enjoy most—nothing complicated, just good food made at home and ready when the family needs it.

They’re especially nice to have around when the apples are in season, whether you’re serving them for breakfast, tucking one into a lunch, or warming one up for an afternoon cup of coffee.
